Each year, The Big Picnic brings people together to celebrate Marcus Garvey Birthday Weekend on the weekend closest to August 17. This is more than a picnic. It is a gathering of people, pride, purpose, and community a time to honour Garvey’s legacy and celebrate culture, unity, and empowerment together.

Honouring The Rt. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a bold Black leader, visionary, and nation-builder who called on people of African descent around the world to unite, take pride in their identity, build their own institutions, and control their own economic future. Through the Universal Negro Improvement Association, he promoted self-reliance, education, business ownership, global Black unity, and a return to dignity and power for a people long oppressed by racism and colonialism. His achievements helped awaken millions to the ideas of Black pride, Pan-African consciousness, and collective advancement, while his message influenced generations of civil rights, Black empowerment, and African liberation leaders. Marcus Garvey played a historic role in teaching our people to see themselves not as victims of history, but as makers of history.
